Transportation

Airports

Oxford does not have an airport near by, so we recommend you fly into London Heathrow or Gatwick. Heathrow is the closest airport to Oxford and therefore the most convenient.

Transport from Heathrow or Gatwick to Oxford

If you are arriving at either Heathrow or Gatwick, we recommend you catch the bus to Oxford . The bus company's website address is: http://www.theairline.info . It is a quick direct service and runs regularly and frequently throughout the day and night.

We suggest you get off the bus in Oxford in the High Street at Queens Lane . See the following web address for a map of Oxford . www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?lat=51.7548&lon=-1.2481&scale=10000&icon=x

The bus turns off the motorway, drives into Headington, a suburb of Oxford , goes down Headington Hill, through St Clements, crosses the river and then goes along the High Street. Get off the bus opposite Queens Lane .

To reach the Eastgate Hotel walk back along the High Street the way the bus has just come in and the Hotel is on your right by the traffic lights.

It is not very far to walk to St Catherine's from the hotel. If you decide to walk, leave the hotel, go into the High Street and cross the road into Longwall Street . Follow the road around some bends and past a pedestrian crossing. Take the next right turn into Manor Road . Go over the bridge at the end of the road and St Catherine's is on your right. See the map to find the Mary Sunley Building .

If you miss the Queens Lane bus stop, go to the bus station and catch a taxi back to the hotel.

Catching a train will take about twice as long as by bus: www.thetrainline.com .

From Heathrow you will need to catch the Heathrow Express to London Paddington station and then catch the train from Paddington to Oxford (you might have to change in Reading ). From Gatwick it is possible to catch a train to Reading where you have to change and catch another one to Oxford .

From Oxford railway station you will need to catch a taxi to the Hotel or St Catherine's College.

Transport from Stansted, Luton or Birmingham

From Stansted there is a National Express bus service direct to Oxford : http://www.intalink.org.uk/Timetables/tt/757_B_ATG.PDF . This runs approximately every 2 hours. There are more frequent services but you will need to change buses at least once. For a full service, see http://www.nationalexpress.com

You can also catch a train into London Liverpool Street , catch the Underground to London Paddington and then a train to Oxford (you might have to change in Reading ).

From Luton there is a National Express bus service to Oxford : http://www.nationalexpress.com . But you will need to change buses once, either in Milton Keynes or at Heathrow airport.

A train from Luton to Oxford would require 2 or 3 changes so is not recommended.

From Birmingham International we would suggest that people catch the train http://www.thetrainline.com . It looks as if you will probably have to change once at Leamington Spa before arriving in Oxford .

Renting a car

Renting a car is not necessary nor is it a particularly good idea. There are limited car parking spaces at St Catherine's and they cost £5.00 per car. Oxford is a small enough city to walk around and should you want to go further a field there are reasonable bus and train services. If you are arriving in the UK before the meetings start and are going to visit friends for example, who live outside a large city, then maybe you would want to consider renting a car.
